PMT
Pre menstrual syndrome (PMS) or pre menstrual tension (PMT) describes a number of symptoms that collectively occur during the luteal phase of the cycle (only seen when ovulation has occurred).
PMT symptoms are commonly classified into the following types:
A – Categorized by anxiety, mood swings irritability and nervous tension.
C – Categorized by carbohydrate craving, headache, increased appetite, fatigue, dizziness and heart pounding.
D – Categorized by depression, crying, confusion, forgetfulness and insomnia.
H – Categorized by hyperhydration, fluid retention and subsequent weight gain, swelling of extremities, breast size increase and tenderness and abdominal bloating.
P – Categorized by period pain, crampy pain, fibromyalgia and reduced pain threshold.
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a more serious mood disorder, characterized by irritability, anger, internal tension, dysphoria and unstable mood. This condition has often shown an improvement with herbs, lifestyle and dietary changes (counseling would also be recommended).
Many believe that PMT functions as an aberrant response to normal changes in oestrogen and progesterone and therefore, some sort of hormonal modulation is often all that is necessary for PMS treatment.
